Threaded Pipe Fittings

Threaded Water Pipe Fittings

Threaded fittings used in the water industry use a standard BSP thread.  What this means is that the pitch and size have are all the same regardless of the Country or manufacturer.  There is one exception to this and that is America.

The standard thread sizes are 1/4" 1/2" 3/4" 12 11/4" 11/2" 2" and so on.  This however is not the end of the story because you cannot just measure a thread with a steel rule and the from this measurement assume that the imperial equivalent is the size of the thread.  As an example if you were to measure a male thread and it measured 26.5 mm outside diameter then the natural assumption would be to assume that it was a 1" BSP thread.  Oh no you would be wrong because this would in actual fact be a 3/4" BSP thread.

To seal a thread on a water pipe fitting you would use a PTFE tape.  On the male thread wrap 3 or 4 wraps of PTFE tape round thread.  The larger the fitting the more PTFE tape will me needed.  Now thread the female fitting on to the male fitting and providing it is quite stiff to turn the fittings should now be waterproof
